A Google Business Profile is the single highest-return marketing asset for a local cleaner, and it costs nothing. It is what puts you in the map pack when someone searches "cleaner near me" in Southend. This guide walks through setup for a cleaner working from home, which is the case that trips most people up.
Before you start
Have these ready:
- A Google account you control — your own, not a web designer's
- Your business name exactly as you want it to appear everywhere
- Your mobile or business number
- The list of postcodes you cover
- Four or five photographs of completed work
The business name matters more than it looks. Whatever you choose here has to match your listings everywhere else, character for character. See NAP consistency for why.
Step 1: Create the profile
Go to google.com/business and sign in. Choose Add your business to Google. Enter your business name. If Google suggests an existing entry that looks like yours, claim that one rather than creating a duplicate — duplicates split your reviews and hurt both listings.
Step 2: Choose a service-area business
When Google asks whether you want to add a location customers can visit, choose no. This makes you a service-area business. Your home address is collected for verification but is not shown publicly.
Then add your service areas. Enter the postcode districts you genuinely cover — SS0, SS1, SS9 and so on. Do not list the whole of Essex if you work three streets. Google measures relevance against proximity, and an inflated area weakens you everywhere.
Step 3: Choose your categories
Pick one primary category and up to nine secondary ones. Common options for cleaners:
- House Cleaning Service (primary for domestic work)
- Commercial Cleaning Service
- Window Cleaning Service
- Carpet Cleaning Service
- Cleaning Service
Your primary category has the largest single influence on what you rank for. Choose the one describing the work you most want more of.
Step 4: Verify
Google offers video verification, postcard, phone or email depending on the account. For service-area businesses, video verification is now most common: you record a short continuous clip showing your work location, equipment or branded vehicle, and something proving it is your business.
Timescales: video is often reviewed within a week; postcard takes up to fourteen days and the code expires, so enter it promptly. Do not create a second profile while waiting — that is the most common cause of a permanent mess.
Step 5: Complete every field
An incomplete profile ranks below a complete one. Fill in:
- Hours. If you answer the phone in the evening, say so.
- Services. Add each one individually — end of tenancy, oven cleaning, ironing — with a short description and a price or price range.
- Description. 750 characters. Say what you do, where, and what makes you different. Write it for a person, not a keyword tool.
- Photos. Real work, not stock. Before-and-after pairs perform best. Add new ones monthly.
- Booking or website link. If you have no website, link your Southend Cleaners listing — a real indexed page beats an empty field.
Step 6: Reviews
Reviews are the strongest single ranking factor in the map pack. Ask at the end of a job, while the customer is looking at a clean kitchen, then send the direct review link by text within the hour.
Never pay for reviews or offer a discount in exchange — it breaches Google's policies and can get the profile suspended. Reply to every review, including the poor ones, calmly and factually.
Step 7: Keep it alive
Post once or twice a month. A photo of finished work, a seasonal offer, or a note about availability is enough. Dormant profiles slide down.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Keyword-stuffing the business name | Suspension risk; name must match real-world usage |
| Publishing your home address | Address shown publicly; unnecessary for service-area work |
| Listing every Essex postcode | Diluted local relevance |
| Creating a second profile while waiting to verify | Duplicate listings, split reviews |
| Never posting or adding photos | Gradual decline in visibility |
What to do next
Once you are verified, the next job is making the rest of the web agree with your profile. That is NAP and the five easy SEO must-dos.
